We chose cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine and acacia senegal gum to impart foaming and film forming qualities to our cleanser instead of certain quaternary ammonium compounds (“quats”) like Polyquaternium-7 and Polyquaternium-39 known to interfere with critical breakdown processes in wastewater treatment facilities, and that are also persistent and harmful to aquatic life.

Brown seaweeds naturally accumulate iodine from seawater as part of their growth process. While iodine is an essential trace element for healthy thyroid function, excessive exposure—especially in sensitive individuals—can disrupt thyroid hormone balance and potentially contribute to thyroid disorders. Indeed, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Verified program enforces strict limits on iodine levels in products containing brown algae. We formulated with the brown seaweed, Cystoseira tamariscifolia algae extract, for its antioxidant and skin conditioning benefits. This specific extract was selected as an alternative to the brown seaweeds, Laminaria saccharina extract and Ascophyllum nodosum extract, which are associated with higher levels of iodine.
